Coaching for Promotion & Internal Career Moves
Position yourself for the next level inside your organisation
Not every career move requires leaving the organisation. Sometimes the better opportunity is internal: a promotion, an assignment, a new business unit, a regional role, a move from specialist to manager, a broader leadership position, or a shift into a function with more strategic relevance.
But internal moves are not automatic. Strong delivery is rarely enough on its own. Promotion and internal mobility depend on visibility, credibility, sponsorship, timing, stakeholder confidence and evidence that you are already operating at the next level.I help professionals position themselves for internal career progression with greater clarity and strategic intent.
When coaching for an external career move is useful
Clients often come to this work when they are asking questions such as:
- “I am ready for a bigger role, but I am not sure how to position myself.”
- “I am doing good work, but I am not visible enough to senior decision-makers.”
- “I have been encouraged to apply for an internal opportunity.”
- “I want to move into a new function, country or business unit.”
- “I need to build support for promotion without appearing political.”
- “I keep being told I am valuable where I am, but I want to move forward.”
- “I need to show that I can operate at the next level.”
These situations require more than ambition. They require organisational reading, stakeholder strategy and a credible professional narrative.
What we work on
Promotion and internal move coaching usually focuses on three questions:
- What does the next level really require?
- Who needs to believe you are ready?
- What evidence will make that belief credible?
The work may include:
- Clarifying the target role or promotion case.
- Understanding the formal and informal decision process.Mapping the stakeholders who
- influence the outcome.
- Identifying your current visibility, credibility and sponsorship gaps.
- Strengthening your executive presence and internal positioning.
- Preparing for career conversations with your manager, skip-level manager, HR or senior sponsors.
- Building a promotion narrative grounded in contribution, not entitlement.
- Preparing for internal interviews or selection processes.
Planning how to handle organisational politics without becoming performative or manipulative.
How the coaching works
We work with your real organisational context. That means looking at your current role, your performance record, your stakeholder map, your manager relationship, your reputation, and the next-level expectations you need to meet.
Where useful, we may prepare specific conversations, including:- A promotion discussion with your manager.
- A career-development conversation with HR.
- An exploratory conversation with a senior sponsor.
- An internal interview.
- A conversation about moving function, geography or business unit.
- A negotiation about scope, title, reporting line or mandate.
The aim is not to help you “play politics” in a shallow way. The aim isto help you understand how organisations make decisions about trust, readiness
and risk.Typical outcomes
Clients usually use this coaching to develop:
- A clearer internal career objective.
- A stronger promotion or internal-move narrative.
- A map of key stakeholders and sponsors.
- A plan to increase visibility and credibility.
- Better preparation for internal interviews and career conversations.
- A practical strategy for moving from strong performance to recognise dreadiness.
